Episode 51: Digital Digital Faux Pas: Just You And Me And Everyone Else In The World

You know that we are living in a digital world and we are digital girls. But that doesn't always mean we make the best digital decisions. When it comes to social media, texting, and email, there are some faux pas that we all need to commit to avoiding. Listen to our discussion this week on the biggest cyber offenses that really grind our gears and then maybe share with your friend who always hits reply all to office emails.

Social Media

  • Using your Facebook status as your Xanga ( we don't need to know every little thing you're doing, people)
  • Sharing an inside joke for the public to see when only you and your BFFs understand what it means (have you ever heard of texting or DMs?)
  • Playing the follow//unfollow game on Instagram (too much work and not enough connection)
  • Hosting a giveaway where you have to follow 18 different accounts just to enter (again, too much work and not enough connection)
  • Accidentally liking someone's picture from 2015 when you're Insta-lurking (you can't hit unlike fast enough)
  • Accounts commenting on your pictures with vague comments like "great" or "beautiful" in a self serving way (can you tell we're really into making genuine connections?)
  • Creating your own hashtag as an aside within your caption (we're looking at you, Joanna Gaines #butshelooks16)
  • Posting something on Twitter, getting backlash, and then pretending it was an accident (you have to take agency of what you put on the Internet, y'all)

Texting

  • Asking a question//starting a conversation and then not keeping the conversation going (we've probably all done this, but when you're the one on the receiving end, it's worthy of a complaint)
  • Not practicing exclamation mark etiquette//showing the proper amount of excitement (you get one or three, not two, or you can use a period + an emoji)
  • Having side conversations in group messages (you want to be a part of them, but if you miss the beginning of the conversation, there's no catching up)
  • Having one person in the group chat who doesn't have an iPhone so all the messages are green (we're looking at you, Tom Baty)
  • Using "lol" as a weird cushion to rest on when you're not quite sure how to wrap something up (however, haha, or it's many variations, is fine)

E-mail

  • Not giving a read receipt (just a courtesy e-mail saying "I got your email, we'll be in touch" so you know the other person got your message)
  • Not properly capitalizing your subject line (capitalize every word if you want, but don't capitalize every letter unless you want to be mistaken for spam)
  • Not addressing the person you're talking to (first names, formal titles, or even a "hey girl" works just fine)
  • Having to go through 80,00 steps to unsubscribe to an email (or getting an email confirming your un-subscription, that's one read receipt we don't need)
  • Replying all (need we say more?)
