Episode 37: You Are Who You Watch: Fictional Characters Who Best Represent Us

Episode 37: You Are Who You Watch: Fictional Characters Who Best Represent Us

Have you ever watched a show or read a book and had the sneaking suspicion that someone has been spying on you and adapted a certain character based on their findings? This week we’re breaking down the characters who have given us this feeling. From childhood storybooks to those portrayed on the small screen, we’re picking our own personality doppelgangers. After listening, check in with us on Instagram to let us know which characters to whom you most relate!

P.S.- here's the Trader Joe's pumpkin spice coffee we spent the majority of the opening segment discussing. You can thank us later.

  • Sara Crewe (A Little Princess): she was raised as an only child (I was an only child until I was 10, she’s imaginative (cue the imaginary siblings), she’s an avid storyteller (I used to beseech my mom to “read with expression”)

  • Liz Lemon (30 Rock): she’s snarky, she’s hungry, we both judge people even though we have serious gaps in our life knowledge (reference episode 32 if you need a refresher). Some of the best quotes to illustrate these similarities:

    • “I already have a drink, do you think he’d buy me mozzarella sticks?” - LL

    • “Oh that work bums me out unless it’s between the words meat and pizza.”-LL (on the word lovers. Gross.)

    • “Why are my arms so weak? It’s like I did that push up last year for nothing.”-LL

  • Lucy Ricardo (I Love Lucy): she’s lovable, she’s always trying to be famous without any actual talent (hello, this podcast), Ricky is always shaking his head at her antics (I have NO experience with that…), and she’s always getting into some sort of mischief with Ethel (what are BFFs for if not to look back on a situation and say “what were we thinking?”)

  • Mindy Lahiri (The Mindy Project): she’s a walking paradox, she’s sassy but smart, thoughtful but trivial (she perfectly embodies the KK tagline), she looks like she has it all together but can just as easily become a hot mess (how many times has my outfit been on point only to later realize I had lipstick on my teeth all night? Too many times, that’s how many.) Some of the best quotes to drive this point home:

    • “I’m like very smart and successful and I’m hot but I don’t know it, which makes me even hotter.”- ML

    • “I’m not picky, I just have high standards.”- ML

    • “My TV is broken and I cannot be alone with my thoughts.”-ML

    • “A doctor told me that my metabolism is so high that I basically have to eat every hour...that doctor was me.”-ML

  • KB’s pick- Belle (Beauty and the Beast): she’s an avid reader, she gets emotionally invested in fictional characters, and the beast kinddaaaa resembles Luke (except Luke is way cuter. And way less hairy.)

  • Jessica Day (New Girl): she’s emotional, she struggles to use the correct name for the male reproductive anatomy, she’s quirky, she’s a teacher, and she perfectly sums up my thoughts on most things:

    • “I feel like I wanna murder someone and also now I want a soft pretzel.”-JD

  • Rory Gilmore (Gilmore Girls): we share the same middle name and same spelling (Leigh, in case you were wondering), we were both born in October, we both have a strange relationship with our moms (except Mona and I don’t talk about it as much, or as fast), and we both shared a dream of attending Harvard in our youth (and both abandoned that dream). Some quotes that further prove this point:

    • “I can’t believe we get to sit around and talk about books and get graded!”- RG

    • “It’s Avril Lavigne’s world, and we’re just living in it.”- RG

  • Monica Geller (Friends) ((KA cosigns this choice)): she’s orderly, she’s persnickety, she’s particular, she’s CLEAN, she loves to cook, she’s a people pleaser. These similarities are evidenced by the following:

    • “And remember, if I’m harsh with you, it’s only because you’re doing it wrong.”-MG

    • “I’ve got this uncontrollable need to please people.”-MG

    • She once compared the dry cleaner to Disneyland (I’ve probably made a similar comparison)

    • She owns cleaning supplies for a car she doesn’t even own (I may or may not own cleaning supplies for hardwood floors I don’t have)
  • Pam Beesly Halpert (The Office): she’s organized, she’s a people pleaser, she doesn’t see the obvious sometimes:

    • “I hate the idea that someone out there hates me. I hate even thinking that al-Qaeda hates me. I think if they got to know me, they wouldn’t hate me.”-PBH
